#WarriorJD SPOTLIGHTS
Our #WarriorJD Spotlight series highlights students and their achievements beyond the classroom. We recently featured Anu Nandi and McKenna Thayer, 2020-21 Women’s Law Caucus (WLC) board members, in honor of Women’s History Month.

As director of diversity and inclusion for WLC, Nandi’s goal was to ensure that the organization is a safe place for women and people of color. She is interested in pursuing a career in immigration law. Thayer served as vice president of community outreach, where she helped the organization raise several hundred dollars to help families facing eviction stay in their homes during the winter.

Summer of Law
Undergraduate students interested in law participated in Wayne Law’s inaugural Damon J. Keith Pre-Law Summer Institute. The free, four-week program was open to rising juniors and seniors who are Detroit residents or graduated from a Detroit Public Schools Community District public high school.

Participants received full LSAT test preparation programming provided by Kaplan, plus opportunities to connect with both mentors in the Detroit legal community and current Wayne Law students. Upon completion of the program, each participant was awarded a $500 stipend to cover LSAT registration costs.

This first-of-its kind program at Wayne State is named in honor of Judge Damon J. Keith, who spent more than 50 years on the federal bench persuasively and movingly defending the Constitution and helping communities enforce their civil rights.

Community Homeless Interprofessional Program

Wayne Law students Erin Deschamps (front left) and Matt Antoniou (front right) braved the summer humidity to participate in Wayne State’s Community Homeless Interprofessional Program (CHIP). A student-run free clinic, CHIP was developed as a collaboration between health professions students and faculty of pharmacy, medicine, social work, law and physical therapy. It is a community partnership with the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit and provides outreach services to residents in need. Deschamps and Antoniou were on board to address legal concerns and provide appropriate referrals for individuals who visited the clinic. They were supervised on-site by Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic Director and Assistant Professor (Clinical) Kathryn M. Smolinski.
